2014 North American Organic Brewers Festival

This Saturday I atteneded the North American Organic Brewers Festival.  After getting my tokens and cup the first thing I saw was the incredibly long line for the bathrooms, and it bewildered me.  For some reason the crowd had organically formed an incredibly long, single file line for the bathrooms.  There was no signage or instructions to form a single line but there it was. Eventually people figured out it was faster to just form a bunch of lines at each stall later in the day.

The cup for this festival was a biodegradable and compostable cornstarch and emblazoned with the NAOBF logo.  I couldn't tell any difference, it looked and felt like a standard plastic cup.  It was clear too which made it easier to see the beer.  I actually preferred it to the hard plastic mugs a lot of other festivals use.

The festival had lots of food vendors as well as a Chipotle sponsored kids area under the big shade tree in Overlook Park.

Eel River Brewing - Fortuna, CA - Acai Berry Wheat B
American Wheat Ale, 4.0% ABV, 5 IBU
A light wheat beer with a strong aroma of açaí, pomegranate and other berries very refreshing beer.

Falling Sky Brewing - Eugene, OR - Brewin’ It Rye’t Pale Ale B-
American Pale Ale , 5.4% ABV, 35 IBU
A reddish colored rye ale with a ton of rye character and spiciness. I would have probably liked it better with maybe a little less rye but I can't fault a rye beer for having too much rye.

Hopworks Urban Brewery - Portland, OR - Totally Radler D+
 Radler, 3.5% ABV, 21 IBU
Tried something new and was not rewarded.  This beer is 70% Hub Lager and 30% lemonade; adding a little lemon flavor to a beer can be a nice addition but for me, 30% is way too much.  This yellow cloyingly sweet beer was more like a pop than a beer, heavily carbonated and very strong lemonade smell and flavor.

Rock Bottom Brewery - Portland, OR - The Wreck of the Annie Faxon B
CDA, 6.7% ABV, 60 IBU
This dark brown beer had toasty roasted flavors and light carbonation.  The hop profile was nice using Cascade and Centennial hops. The beer also had a light rye character that was slightly muted from the roasted grains but still present.

McMenamins Roseburg Station - Roseburg, OR - White Rhino Wit D-
Organic Wit Bier , 4.3% ABV, 22 IBU
The first thing I noticed about this beer was the aroma.  I don't know why but the only thing I got was a strong smell of garbage, essence of dump.  A cloudy yellow beer tasted ok having some orange and coriander flavors but I just could not get past the smell.

Loowit Brewing Co. - Vancouver, WA - Gaiabolical B+
Pale Ale, 5.3% ABV, 45 IBU
Pretty good beer.  Clear yellow nothing really stood out other than the claim that it used Salmon Safe Hops.

ThirstyBear Brewing Co. - San Francisco, CA - Panda Bear Ale A-
Spiced Golden Ale, 5% ABV, 20 IBU
Best in show!  Looking at this clear golden ale I was prepared for another lightly hopped pale ale with a crisp clean finish, I was so wrong.  A huge chocolate and vanilla nose eruption immediately consumed my nasal passages.  Unlike anything I had smelled before sweet and chocolatey this beer had a terrific nose to it.  Followed up by a flavor that should never have come from a beer this light. This flavor was provided by whole vanilla beans and TCHO cocoa nips which explains why there was not dark color since neither raise the SRM of a beer just infuse with tons of flavor.

Two Kilts Brewing Co. - Sherwood, OR - Crystal Kush C+
California Common, 5.2% ABV, 55 IBU
A delicious beer with a clean malt bill that allows the hop character to shine. Careful malt selection creates great mouthfeel, while the use of only one hop variety, right down to the dry-hop addition, makes for a great summer beer experience with dank Crystal bitterness and aroma.
This cloudy yellow beer had a medium body with a smooth mouthfeel.  The hop aroma was slightly skunky, although to clarify it did not smell light struck though more like a dank mustyness from hops.

Golden Valley Brewery McMinnville, OR - Wheat Tart B
Berliner Weisse, 3.2% ABV, 5 IBU
A clear pale beer with a nice balanced sourness to it provided by Lacotobacillus and the Golden Valley house Kolsch yeast.  It was moderately sour but did not have any pucker to it just enough to be a sour beer.  A slight strawberry flavor was in the aftertaste that was very pleasant.

Ambacht - Hillsboro, OR - Bourbon Barrel Aged G++ B+
Belgian Strong Golden, 8.5% ABV, 18 IBU
The last beer I had as the sun was going down was this double token beer.  Ambacht got a hold of some Hair of the Dog barrels use make Adam from the Wood.  The beer was aged in these for nine months.  This lightly sour beer has a nice mellow bourbon aroma and flavor not too much oak character that I could find but it was the last beer of the night so my senses had probably been dulled.

This was my first NAOBF but I'll definitely be going again the lines are incredibly short unless you are talking about the bathroom line, but that got figured out later. The range of beers was pretty heavily leaning towards the lighter summer beers which was good because for most of the day it was pretty hot.  It started to rain briefly and the crowd started to cheer, I would imagine because of the inevitability of rain in Portland at almost any event.  Overall a great time with a nice selection of high quality organic beers.

Bridgeport Brewing - Hop Czar Topaz Copper IPA

Beer:  Hop Czar Topaz Copper IPA
Style: IPA
Serving: Snifter Glass (12 oz.) 
ABV: 6.5%
IBUs: 70

A : This beer has an orangish head with moderate lacing and quite a few bubbles clinging to walls of the glass.  This slightly hazy and darkish copper colored beer.

S : Tropical fruit hop aroma coming from the combination of Topaz and Bravo hops are supported by a strong malt backbone allowing

T : The hop flavor is muted a little from the aroma, the toasted flavor and caramel character start off in front. After a moment the grassy and tropical fruitiness flavors come through.

M : Very light, almost thin mouthfeel with a bitter back-end that stays with you after drank

O : Not my favorite beer from Bridgeport but definitely not a bad beer.  The lingering bitterness isn't exactly what I was hoping it would be.  That being said this is a pretty good beer I'd definitely pick up a six pack but don't think I'd chose it for one of my regular beer selections though.

New Release from Burnside Brewing Co. - Project Ale

Burnside Brewing Co. releases a long in the making collaboration "Project Ale" as a tribute to the Burnside Skatepark which began as a 3-ft x 3-ft bank under the Burnside Bridge and became one of the premier skate parks in the world. It was built by local skaters is on the east side of Portland and was featured in the original Tony Hawk Pro Skater video game.

Project Ale is brewed in honor of the Burnside Skatepark and is an Imperial IPA with a clean, silky malt presence, and is loaded with hop flavor and aroma.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit Burnside Skatepark.

Project Ale is a new year-round bottled Imperial IPA from Burnside Brewing, first only available in Oregon at specialty retailer accounts. Coming in a 99.5 IBUs and 8% alcohol this beer is not to be trifled with. The Project Ale recipe is based upon popular (but never before bottled) Burnside pub beer "Alter Ego." The Project Ale version of Alter Ego has three additional hoppings including a dry-hop with Bullions for maximum flavor and aroma impact.

Bridgeport Brewery - Trilogy 2 Aussie Salute IPA

Beer: Trilogy 2 Aussie Salute IPA
Style: IPA
Serving: Snifter Glass (12 oz.)
ABV: 5.8%
IBUs: 55

A collaboration with current brewmaster Jeff Edgerton and Bridgeports original brewmaster Phil Sexton, who created Bridgeport IPA, and has since moved on to Australia.  This is the first time they have worked together in this transcontinental collaboration over email.

A (3/3): A hazy golden ale with a soft white head that leaves behind pretty minimal lacing.

S (9/12): Pleasant grassy and floral hop aroma.   Not the usual overpowering Citrus hop bomb that has become so popular in IPAs.  Hints of pepper nothing really stands out distinctly, an incredibly well blended aroma with very complex notes.

T (17/20): Hopped with Oregon Willamette Valley Centennial and Chinook hops and dry hopped with Australian Galaxy and Ella hops. The malt sweetness goes in and out just popping in to say hi and then leaving.

M (4/5): A medium bodied beer with a nice malt backbone that doesn't take away from the hops. Finishes with a little residual hop bitterness.

O (7/10):  A solid IPA, drinkable as hell.  The Australian hops are a nice change from what has become the pretty much standard, but still amazing Pacific Northwest IPA.

Sam Adams Brew and View 2014

     This Saturday June 21st Sam Adams will be hosting a summer party with Sam Adam Beer, Lawn Games, Food Trucks, and Live Music, After the sun goes down Wedding Crashers will be projected on a large HD screen.  Bring lawn chairs or blankets so you'll have a place to sit.  Space will be limited so reserve your TICKETS now as space will fill up fast.
     This 21 and over event is free and open to the public. You can reserve your tickets ahead of time.  No food or drink can be brought into the park, however Samuel Adams Beer and food from local food trucks will be available for purchase. Doors open at 6:00PM and the movie starts at 8:00PM.  Be sure to bring money for food trucks and beer.

2014 Portland Beer and Cheese Festival

     This Sunday is the third annual Portland Beer and Cheese Festival.  The fest takes place at Burnside Brewing and has had a selection of cheeses selected by cheesemonger Steve Jones of Cheese Bar.
     The beer pairings will be supplied by 11 different west coast breweries as well as snacks provided by Chop Butchery and Charcuterie.  
     A souvenir logo snifter glass is included with your entry along with a punch card that allows you to try all of the beer and cheese pairings.

2014 Portland Fruit Beer Festival

     Saturday I went to the 2014 Portland Fruit Beer Festival at Burnside Brewing.  It was a very warm day and the festival being in on the blacktop of the Burnside parking lot did not help.  The festival was opened up for an additional day on Friday in order to reduce the crowding.  I didn't go last year so I have nothing to compare it to but I think it may have gotten popular enough for a larger venue.
    In spite of the minor crowding and the hot weather the festival was a great time.  Lines were a little long but some of that may just have been trying to figure out where the end of the line was.  Once I discovered that most people were just hanging out under the tent to stay cool, the lines went much faster.
    The glasses were awesome! I didn't measure, but they seemed to be larger than the traditional plastic beer fest cup that I have come to expect for festivals.  It is always much nicer to drink out of glass than a plastic mug.
Rare Beer Line
     There was also a Rare & Rotating Fruit Beer list where you could get a glass or sample the beers that the breweries deemed a little more valuable than the standard one ticket.  Most beers here were going for 2-3 tickets for a taster.  The line was very long so I didn't try any of them although these were some of the most interesting sounding beers.  I only got to try a few beers but for the most part they were pretty good.

Hopworks Urban Brewery - Organic Fruit Cocktail - Portland, OR
Belgian Fruit Beer - ABV: 5.9% IBU:4 B+
Featuring juice from the USDA definition of Fruit Cocktail 40% Peaches, 35% Pears 10% Pineapple , 10% grapes and 5% Cherries.  A hazy golden ale with lively carbonation the fruit flavor comes through but its very complex no one fruit really stands out.

Falling Sky Brewing - Marionberry Smoked Ale - Eugene, OR
Fruit and Smoke Beer - ABV: 5.4% IBU: 17 C+
Malt smoked in peach wood gives this beer its smoke character.  I found this aroma to be very smokey and not too much of the marionberry came through.  I would have probably liked it a little more if the concentrations were reversed.  The flavor had a little more berry but still very smokey.

Oakshire Brewing - Oude Bes: Strawberry Balsalmic - Eugene, OR
Flanders Red - ABV: 6.2% IBU: 12 A
Vintage barrels of Flanders Red-style beer aged in Pinot barrels with strawberries and plums that were inoculated with Brett and Lacto.  Aged on strawberry puree and a balsamic vinegar reduction.
A hazy amber beer with strong strawberry aroma and flavor.  Moderately sour with a slight funk Superb beer probably my favorite.

Elysian Brewing - Seattle, WA - D'Mango Unchained
Pale Ale - ABV: 6% - IBU: 32 B
Light bitterness and mango fruitiness bittered with Centennial an finished with Citra and Mosaic Hops. Four lbs of pureed mango were added to each barrel in the fermenter.  Moderate mango aroma nice flavor, nothing really stood out as amazing about this beer but it was definitely enjoyable.

Reverend Nats's Hard Cider - Portland, OR - ¡Sweet Triple Hot Tepache!
Pineapple Wine with Peppers - ABV: 3.2% - IBU: 0 C+
Partially fermented pineapples with Habanero, Aji and Ghost chilies all went into this beer. A cloudy golden ale with a strong pineapple aroma after a few breaths a aroma almost like that of bacon came to me.  The taste was sweet with a little residual spice.

Worthy Brewing - Bend, OR - Peachy Keen
Cream Ale Brewed with Peaches - ABV: 5.1% - IBU: 24 B-
Smooth, golden beer brewed with milk sugar (lactose) and  peaches.  Some nice peach aromatics came off this beer and the lactose gave it a little residual sweetness.  The peach aroma in the flavor had more of the peach pit flavor to me, still refreshing and pleasant to drink.

     When we were fruit beer'd out we walked over to Ash Street Saloon for a Thunder Carriage show.  While crossing the Burnside bridge came across what I can only think is the nomads version of a missed connections column.  Karen, if you are out there, please call Timothy.  His felt tip markers long for your sweet embrace. 

Bridgeport Brewing - Stumptown Tart (2014) Review

Brewery: Bridgeport Brewing
Location: Portland, OR
Beer: Stumptown Tart (2014)
Style: Belgian Style Ale
Serving: Snifter Glass (22 oz.) 
ABV: 7.8%
IBUs: 21

A (3/3): A light red almost peach colored hazy beer.  Tiny curtains of bubbles rise from the glass creating the soft creamy head that leaves behind minimal lacing as it's drank down.

S (8/12): The aroma that comes off this glass is very fruity with a slight horse blanket character.  Cranberry is definitely present and may do a bit to overpower the blueberry.

T (12/20): Flavored with a blueberry and cranberry puree this beer was more tart than I was expecting.  The cranberries really give it a tang that only a cranberry could.  An alternating dance of blueberry sweetness and residual tanic bite from the cranberries fight for sensory superiority.

M (4/5): A medium bodied beer with a lively carbonation level and a biting finish.  Some residual sweetness is there, but a definite tanic character presents itself after swallowed.

O (7/10): Probably not my favorite iteration of Stumptown Tart but overall a very enjoyable beer.  The cranberry tartness and pucker stays with you for quite some time after drinking.


UNRELATED RANDOM OBSERVATION: The Stumptown tart bottle was a little more risque than in years past, sporting a two piece swimsuit instead of the more conservative full coverage pinup outfits of years past.  Although 2011 Strawberry was also in a two piece suit, this year exposes a little more mid-drift, but as always the pinup style artwork is fantastic.

4th Annual Portland Beer Week June 5-15

The 4th annual Portland Beer Week starts June 5th with the largest showing yet, over 90 events including festivals, beer dinners, seminars, tastings and pairing events.  This week also introduces several beer week themed consumables including the 2014 beer week beer from Worthy Brewing and Hopworks, an official beer week sandwich from Lardo, official ice cream from Salt & Straw and the official Beer Donuts from Blue Star Donuts.
Founded in 2010 Portland Beer Week’s goal is to celebrate the diversity, creativity and excitement for craft beer from Portland, Oregon. More than just a collection of drinking events, organizers explore the furthest reaches of beer with cooking and unique pairings to the innermost details with seminars and beer deconstructions.

A whole host of events can be found this year get ready for a celebration Portland craft beer.

2014 Fruit Beer Fest Preview

     I was invited to preview some of the beers for this years Fruit Beer Fest, sponsored by the Willamette Week, at Burnside Brewing. Burnside will be the location of the festival Saturday June 7th and Sunday June 8th, with a special VIP event on Friday the 6th.  This preview event was orchestrated by Ezra Johnson-Greenough who is in charge of organizing the festival.

Ecliptic Head Brewer John Harris
Ecliptic Brewing - Portland, OR - Lacerta Frambuesa
Style: Belgian Framboise
ABV: 6.5% IBU: 20
Description: Named after Lacerta the lizard constellation and Brewed in the Aztec style this light base beer is infused with cocoa nibs in the mash. Hopped gently to let the malt flavors shine through. Once fermentation started ramping-up pounds of Raspberries were added to the fermenter. Lacerta has a nice Belgian yeast spiciness that blends well with the fruit. The Cocoa nibs add a layer of flavor to the malt profile. I got a mild bubble gum flavor from this reddish beer. Available at the festival first and then will be released to the tap house.

Laurelwood Brewing - Portland, OR - Orange You Glad I Didn't Say Banana?
Style: Citrus Wheat Ale ABV: 4.4 IBU:14
Description: A tart old world wheat with mixed citrus (Various including Orange, Lemon, Lime, grapefruit and whatever else we can scare up) zest and juice. 100+ International Citrus Units. CITRUS ALL DAY LONG. This beer was incredibly aromatic and flavorful or oranges limes and lemons with some banana an clove character as well. Over 600 lbs of citrus fruits were processed to make this beer and it smells and tastes like it. Very unique, a definite must try.

Jason Barbee, Deschutes Brewing
Deschutes Brewery - Portland, OR - Peach Slap
Style: Sour Ale with Peaches ABV: 3.2% IBU: 22
Description Peach Slap is a crisp, tart Belgian ale with a generous helping of peach puree. The base beer is light but well rounded thanks to a portion of un-malted wheat, and gains complexity from the addition of juniper berries and pink peppercorn. For brewer Jason Barbee this beer was a happy accident. Originally meant to be an american version of a Belgian table beer the lacto got a little out of hand and made this a delightfully sour beer with a unique lime quality. At the last minute the decision was made to throw in 1% peach and habenero syrup that plays very well. Not a hot beer by any means but just the right amount of spice.

Lompoc Brewing - Portland, OR - Pear'n Kramer
Style: Golden Ale ABV: 5%
Description: A golden ale fermented with pears that were handpicked in Salem, OR by brewers a and bartenders of Lompoc in August 2013. This beer sat on those pears for 5 months before being transferred to another tank for conditioning where it was inoculated with a touch of gueuze. Pear Aroma with a slight barnyard flavor. This beer was named after one of the bartenders mom Karen Kramer who supplied the 40 lbs of pears from her tree.

Burnside Brewing - Portland, OR - Nero's Fiddle
Style: Graff ABV: 7.0%
Description: Burnside Brewing and EZ Orchards Cider came together to create this Belgian-style graff. A blend of late harvest Roman Beauty, Pink Lady, and Granny Smith apples was whirlpooled into the kettle at flame-off. The wort/juice blend was then fermented with a Belgian yeast to create aromas of apple, pear, vanilla, and rose. The proprietary blend of apples drive the flavor profile of this tart and dry summertime hybrid. Brewers Sam Pecoraro and Chip Conlon used a Belgian Strong Ale yeast to create this beer and cider combination beverage.

Alameda Brewing - Portland, OR - Mamey B
Belgian Dark Golden ABV 6.6% IBU: 45
Description: The Mayme B is a Belgian Dark Golden bier brewed with Mamey fruit. This tropical fruit native to the Caribbean and Central America has a flavor which could be described as a mix of sweet potato and pumpkin topped off with maraschino cherry and a almond twist. The mamey was added post boil in the kettle and also post fermentation lending this beer a lovely almond/vanilla character. Subtle hops meld with a simple malt bill of Belgian Pilsner malt, Special B, and the clean Belgian yeast to create an interesting and nuanced brew. The beer itself has a distinct Belgian taste with a strong vanilla charterer and spice and a slight black licorice flavor.

Widmer Brothers/5 Stones Artisan Brewery - Portland, OR - Up From San Antone
Style: Grapefruit White IPA ABV: 6.6% IBU: 55
Description: Up from San Antone is a White IPA brewed with coriander and the zest and juice of 100+ pounds of fresh grapefruit. This limited release collaboration was brewed with 5 Stones, a small brewery in Cibolo Texas (near San Antonio) that specializes in brewing with fresh produce and non-traditional ingredients. Named after a line in the song “Amarillo by Morning,” the name is a nod to the location of our collaboration partner and the liberal use of Amarillo hops. Up from San Antone has a wonderfully hoppy and grapefruity aroma, and the flavor is crisp and refreshing. Citrusy and bright, this is an amazingly drinkable IPA with loads of character. This beer is also brewed at 5 Stones and its called Back from Bridge City at their brewery. Cloudy beer with a big juicy grapefruit aroma, pretty hoppy and tons on citrus of course and the distinct flavor that comes from a pound of coriander.

Fort George head brewer, Matt Licata
Fort George Brewery - Astoria, OR - Pi Beer
Style: Fruit Wheat Beer
ABV: 5% IBU: 3.14159265335897932384...
Description: A 40% Wheat beer with a secondary fermentation on strawberries and rhubarb. It is light, tart, fruity, pink and very drinkable. Fort George head brewer Matt Licata was on site to discuss the creation of this beer which was originally a recipe from owner Jack Harris. Subtle rhubarb and strawberry flavors.  I got a chance to talk with Matt a little bit about brewing, very approachable and easy to talk to.

Gigantic Brewing - Portland, OR - Boysen The Hood
Style: Golden Tart Boysen Belgian ABV: 6.4 IBU: 19
Description: A tart Belgian-Style Boysenberry Golden, soured in the kettle and hand crafted using only pilsner, crystal and wheat malts as well as locally grown Mt Hood and Crystal hops. Brewer Scott Guckel used only naively sourced boysenberries from Oregon. This sourish lambic was kettle soured with lacto overnight and then fermented with Wyeast Leuven pale ale yeast to give the beer its unique flavor.

The Commons - Portland, OR - Citrus Royale
A last minute addition to the fruit beer fest preview they brought a reinterpretation of their Bier Royale that was so popular last year. This base beer of spelt, flaked wheat, and pilsner malt was the same as Bier Royal however it was soured with yogurt. This citrusy aroma was brought out from murcott mandarin, naval oranges, and mire limes a hint of horse blanket was noticeable as well. The goal, as brewer Sean Burke described it, was to have something along the same vein as a mimosa, which I think they hit pretty well. This beer is available in The Commons tasting room but I would imagine it would be gone soon.

Abram Goldman-Armstrong, Cider Riot!
Abram Goldman-Armstrong from Cider Riot! was also at the preview to tell us about a special tapping that will be at the fest. Saturday the 7th at 3:00PM he will be tapping a cider "Hedgerow Fruit" whose name is a nod the beer writer Michael Jackson, who used the term frequently. This cask conditioned, dry cider will be served in a firkin and contains black currants and Italian plums. Since this is a very small quantity and a limited release it will go extremely quickly.
